A giant public art piece aimed at encouraging people to be kinder and to care for their community has been unveiled at Edmonton Green Shopping Centre.
The mural, which spans 193 sq ft, was designed by talented local artist Kareen Cox, and can be found at The Concourse entrance.
The theme represents community, inclusivity, family and friendships, as well as portraying people lending a helping hand and looking out for each other.
Kareen said: “I often ask on social media, can you be someone’s rainbow today? I wanted to include these particular quotes on the art piece to encourage people to think about how their actions can have a positive impact on others.
“The vibrant colours represent the wonderful diversity in Edmonton Green. Coming from a Caribbean background, representation definitely matters to me and I feel that it’s important for children (and adults) to see people in the arts that represent them. I however enjoy using colours which are not considered normal skin tone bases which aids with inclusivity for all.”
The African proverb ‘It takes a village to raise a child’ is the main inspiration for the illustration, titled ‘Unity in the Comm(unity)’ which took several weeks to design from start to finish.
Rebecca Bird, Retail Manager at Edmonton Green, said: “I loved watching Kareen’s creative process as she really understands our local community. The final piece looks fantastic and really brightens up the entrance making it feel really welcoming.”
The shopping centre mural comes just six months after Kareen was commissioned to be part of Enjoy Enfield Summer which saw six giant public art pieces unveiled at zebra crossings across the borough, designed by Enfield artists.
Sabri Marsaoui, Asset Director at Edmonton Green, said: “It has been an absolute pleasure working with Kareen on this community project.
“it is clear that she is an exceptional local talent, and we just knew from day one that she was the right person to work with to create our fabulous new mural, which is based around the themes of kindness, unity, and love within the community.”
