Further Information

The most efficient method of waste disposal is to avoid waste in the first place.

Ashdown Phillips, EGSC, Regency Recycle and Pulse advocates waste minimisation policies and we are always on hand to recommend ways of cutting down on the amount of waste produced.

While we exist to deal with unavoidable waste and pledge to dispose of it in the most ethical manner, our key advice is always to look at ways of reducing the amount of waste produced.

Our waste minimisation campaigns will help you think about conserving resources and the benefits of avoiding waste.

If waste can be re-used or recycled it will be. Where recycling is not possible because of the nature of the material, it will be disposed of in the most environmentally friendly way. Our pledge is to offer you a zero to landfill waste disposal service.

Here’s what we want to increase in 2026:

  • Refuse Derived Fuel: RDF is waste diverted from landfill and turned into refuse derived fuel, which is primarily used as a combustible fuel source to generate heat and electricity in specialized Energy from Waste (EfW) plants, cement kilns, and industrial boilers. Produced from processed non-recyclable waste, it serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels, reducing landfill reliance. Energy from Waste (EfW) Plants: RDF is burned to produce steam and electricity for industrial or municipal district heating systems.
  • Anaerobic Digestion: Food waste from the centre is sent for Anaerobic digestion (AD)which is a natural, oxygen-free process where microorganisms break down organic matter—such as food waste, manure, and sewage sludge—inside sealed tanks. This process produces biogas (a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide) for renewable energy (heat/electricity) and nutrient-rich digestate, which is used as fertilize
  • Mill: When cardboard is recycled, it’s collected, sorted, shredded, and mixed with water to create a pulp, which is cleaned of contaminants like tape and staples, then pressed, dried, and rolled into new sheets to make new boxes, packaging, or even plasterboard. The fibers can typically be recycled 5-7 times before they become too short, at which point they might be used for tissue or paperboard products.
