Fascinated by anything mechanical, silver and shiny, Steve wasted no time in finding his career path in life. Now he stands proud as Edmonton Green Shopping Centre’s longest serving retailer.
Steve is the owner of While-U-Wait. His kiosk sits at the edge of South Mall and believe us when we say it took a while to get him alone for five minutes to take his photo. Dozens line up to use Steve’s efficient and affordable key cutting service and it doesn’t take long to see how much his customers love him as they stand chatting away waiting for their keys to be cut or shoes to be repaired.
“I went straight from leaving grammar school into working at my local locksmiths where I come from in Bethnal Green as I was fascinated by anything mechanical, particularly locks and keys,” Steve explains.
“After getting married and having my three sons I decided to go self-employed and purchased the lease of 33 The Broadway in Edmonton Green, as I knew the area to be a very busy spot and the market was a famous landmark.
“I stayed there for 16 happy, prosperous years, until the shop sadly had to be demolished. I then transferred to my present unit in South Mall, which although much smaller has been equally successful.”
After 35 years in Edmonton Green, Steve is a pillar of the community and he has made an enormous amount of friends over the years.
He added: “I have had the joy of seeing three generations of families grow and prosper and return to have their keys cut with their children and grandchildren in tow.
“I love my job and I am extremely happy in my work. The other market traders at Edmonton Green are a great bunch. Everyone’s got a geat sense of humour and we’re always having a laugh and a joke. My 8 grandchildren are my love in life and I spend any free time I have with them.
“The shopping centre has recently had new owners who have invested a lot of time and effort into updating and greatly improving the centre. We also have a new, young and dynamic management team and I am really looking forward to seeing the story unfold for the brave new world of Edmonton Green.”
Steve’s kiosk is open 8am to 5.30 pm, Monday to Saturday. If you’ve never had the pleasure of meeting Steve pop down and say hi next time you’re in need of a new set of keys and find out what other services he offers.
